In a first for the tech industry, darkside hackers have stolen money from corporations and donated it to charities, emulating Robin Hood.
The group claims to have extorted “millions” from various companies to “make the world a better place”.
So far, the group has posted two receipts on the darkweb, for $10,000 worth of bitcoin to two charities in Britain. One of the charities, Children International, have said they will not be keeping the donated stolen money. The charity supports children and under-priviliged families in Philippines, India, Colombia, Ecuador, Zambia and Mexico, among others countries.
The group has said they only target large and profitable companies with their ransomware attacks. These attacks hold companies’ IT systems hostage until a ransom is paid.
Authorities in Britain believe they have proof that the group is linked to attacks on some companies including Travelex which was subjected to a ransomware attack in January 2020.
