{"id":21318,"date":"2023-01-13T07:30:59","date_gmt":"2023-01-13T07:30:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dailykashmirpost.com\/eng\/?p=21318"},"modified":"2023-01-13T07:30:59","modified_gmt":"2023-01-13T07:30:59","slug":"sindh-delays-karachi-hyderabad-lg-polls-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dailykashmirpost.com\/eng\/2023\/01\/13\/sindh-delays-karachi-hyderabad-lg-polls-again\/","title":{"rendered":"Sindh delays Karachi, Hyderabad LG polls again"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong class=\"location-names\">KARACHI : <\/strong>Following\u00a0a late-night huddle of the Sindh cabinet, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP)-led provincial government announced the postponement of local body (LB) polls in Karachi and\u00a0Hyderabad, and revoked\u00a0the notification regarding new constituencies.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to journalists in the early hours of Friday in Karachi, Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon said that the local government\u00a0polls in the remaining districts of Sindh will be held as per schedule on Jan 15.<\/p>\n<p>The minister furthered that the decision has been taken after the Sindh cabinet meeting and was not taken on the \u201cprotest and threat of anyone\u201d, however, he added that the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) did have reservations about delimitations.<\/p>\n<p>Memon maintained\u00a0that the concerns of the MQM-P will be resolved at the government level as it is also the ruling PPP\u2019s ally. Moreover, he cited security concerns in the province.<\/p>\n<p>Subsequently, the Sindh government also wrote a letter, a copy of which is available with\u00a0<em>The Express Tribune<\/em>, to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and requested the electoral watchdog to postpone LB polls in Dadu district.<\/p>\n<p>The letter stated that due to the post-flood situation, a large area of the district is still underwater.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.tribune.com.pk\/media\/images\/WhatsApp-Image-2023-01-13-at-9-52-20-AM1673587367-0\/WhatsApp-Image-2023-01-13-at-9-52-20-AM1673587367-0.jpeg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHolding LG elections will deprive [a] large section of society from their constitutional right to vote,\u201d read the letter.<\/p>\n<p>The latest development in the province\u2019s LG polls comes just hours after the Pak Sarzameen Party (PSP) Chairman Syed Mustafa Kamal and MQM Organisation Restoration Committee founder Dr Farooq Sattar buried the hatchet and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tribune.com.pk\/story\/2395485\/mqm-p-reunifies-breakaway-factions-ahead-of-lg-polls\" rel=\"nofollow\">announced<\/a>\u00a0rejoining the MQM-P to \u201cjointly raise voice for the rights of the people of urban areas of Sindh\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>During a press conference, in which the leaders announced the reunification of MQM-P, Convener Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui had warned that they would not let the local government polls take place on January 15 if the issue of delimitations was not fixed.<\/p>\n<p>The MQM-P has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tribune.com.pk\/story\/2391734\/tug-of-war-ppp-mqm-still-at-odds-over-delimitation-process\" rel=\"nofollow\">rejected<\/a>\u00a0the delimitations held by the PPP-led Sindh government and the ECP in Karachi and has termed the process as unfair.<\/p>\n<p><strong>JI to stage protest outside ECP<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Following the announcement of the Sindh government to postpone LG polls in the province, Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi has said it would stage a sit-in outside the ECP today at 3 pm.<\/p>\n<p>While holding an emergency press conference at Noor-ul-Haq Institute in Karachi, JI leader Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman rejected the announcement of the Sindh government and said that the elections were postponed due to fear of the people&#8217;s mandate.<\/p>\n<p>He added that the people were deprived of their democratic and political rights.<\/p>\n<p>It is pertinent to note that the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tribune.com.pk\/story\/2366900\/sindh-lg-polls-postponed-until-aug-28\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">second round<\/a>\u00a0of LG elections in 16 districts of Sindh was to be held on July 24, 2022.<\/p>\n<p>However, the Sindh administration had excused itself from holding the polls over the lack of security and police presence because of the floods that wreaked havoc across the country, including Sindh.<\/p>\n<p>Later, the LG elections were rescheduled for August 28 but the elections did not take place on that day and a new date was again set as October 23.<br \/>\nHowever, the polls were\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tribune.com.pk\/story\/2381346\/sindh-govt-again-wants-lg-polls-postponed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">postponed<\/a>\u00a0on that date too.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, the ECP had\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tribune.com.pk\/story\/2394890\/ecp-rules-lg-polls-in-karachi-hyderabad-to-be-held-on-15th\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">ruled<\/a>\u00a0that the local government elections in Karachi, Hyderabad, and Thatta would be held on Jan 15 as per schedule.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>KARACHI : Following\u00a0a late-night huddle of the Sindh cabinet, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP)-led provincial government announced the postponement of local body (LB) polls in Karachi and\u00a0Hyderabad, and revoked\u00a0the notification regarding new constituencies.
