{"id":16218,"date":"2022-02-15T07:51:59","date_gmt":"2022-02-15T07:51:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dailykashmirpost.com\/eng\/?p=16218"},"modified":"2022-02-15T07:51:59","modified_gmt":"2022-02-15T07:51:59","slug":"iran-says-nuclear-deal-at-hand-but-sanctions-must-be-truly-lifted","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dailykashmirpost.com\/eng\/2022\/02\/15\/iran-says-nuclear-deal-at-hand-but-sanctions-must-be-truly-lifted\/","title":{"rendered":"Iran says nuclear deal \u2018at hand\u2019 but sanctions must be \u2018truly lifted\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"content-area\" data-io-article-url=\"https:\/\/www.geo.tv\/latest\/399270-iran-says-nuclear-deal-at-hand-but-sanctions-must-be-truly-lifted\">\n<ul>\n<li><b>After months of on-off negotiations, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell added to hopes of a renewed deal.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>US unilaterally withdrew in 2018 under then-president Donald Trump and reimposed stiff economic sanctions.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Negotiations in Vienna aim to return the US to the nuclear deal, including through the lifting of sanctions on Iran.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr class=\"editorHr\" \/>\n<p>Tehran: Iran on Monday said an agreement to revive a 2015 nuclear deal with world powers was \u201cat hand\u201d, but insisted that sanctions be \u201ctruly lifted\u201d through ongoing talks in Vienna.<\/p>\n<p>After months of on-off negotiations, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell added to hopes of a renewed deal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI strongly believe an agreement is in sight,\u201d he said on Twitter, after a call with Iran\u2019s foreign minister.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe moment has come to make an ultimate effort and reach a compromise,\u201d Borrell said, in his dual capacity as coordinator of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the deal agreed between Iran and world powers in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>But Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, receiving Irish foreign and defence minister Simon Coveney on Monday, said that \u201csanctions must be truly lifted\u201d in the ongoing negotiations to revive the deal in the Austrian capital.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe rights of the Iranian people must be respected,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>The talks involve Iran, Britain, China, France, Germany and Russia directly, and the United States indirectly.<\/p>\n<p>The 2015 deal offered Tehran sanctions relief in exchange for curbs on its nuclear programme, but the US unilaterally withdrew in 2018 under then-president Donald Trump and reimposed stiff economic sanctions, prompting Tehran to begin rolling back on its commitments.<\/p>\n<p>US State Department spokesman Ned Price struck a cautious note late Monday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are going to be a bit more circumspect in terms of progress that we may be seeing on the ground in Vienna,\u201d he told reporters. \u201cTime is almost out\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Raisi hailed Ireland\u2019s \u201cindependence from the United States and some European countries\u201d, adding that the two countries have \u201cvast capabilities\u201d to strengthen ties, according to state news agency IRNA.<\/p>\n<p>Ireland occupies one of the non-permanent seats on the UN Security Council this year, and did so last year. It has been acting as facilitator for Resolution 2231, which was agreed in 2015 to endorse the JCPOA.<\/p>\n<p>Also on Monday, Iran\u2019s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said that he believed a revived agreement is \u201cat hand\u201d, provided the US and European parties \u201care serious\u201d about returning to full compliance with the deal.<\/p>\n<p>Coveney said he believed the Western parties to the 2015 deal are \u201cdeeply committed to making this work,\u201d addressing reporters alongside his Iranian counterpart.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI discussed with Iranian counterparts the steps now needed to finalise a return to an agreement that will provide significant benefits to the Iranian economy, through the lifting of sanctions,\u201d Coveney added.<\/p>\n<p>Negotiations in Vienna aim to return the US to the nuclear deal, including through the lifting of sanctions on Iran, and to ensure Tehran\u2019s full compliance with its commitments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur goal is the full removal of all JCPOA sanctions,\u201d Amir-Abdollahian said, adding that \u201cit is better for the Islamic republic to reach an agreement today rather than tomorrow\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The Iranian top diplomat\u2019s remarks followed comments by his ministry\u2019s spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh, who said earlier on Monday that \u201cthere is no impasse in Vienna\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe negotiations are complicated and difficult, as they have reached key issues that need serious political decisions, especially by Washington,\u201d Khatibzadeh told a news conference.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need objective guarantees to make sure the US does not leave the agreement once again and that it honours its commitments,\u201d Khatibzadeh said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll JCPOA sanctions with any labels must be lifted at the same time,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>The drive to salvage the 2015 nuclear deal resumed in late November after a pause following Raisi\u2019s election in June.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After months of on-off negotiations, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell added to hopes of a renewed deal.
