{"id":13177,"date":"2021-10-28T11:46:13","date_gmt":"2021-10-28T11:46:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dailykashmirpost.com\/eng\/?p=13177"},"modified":"2021-10-28T11:46:13","modified_gmt":"2021-10-28T11:46:13","slug":"stern-signal-to-china-india-tests-agni-5-ballistic-missile","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dailykashmirpost.com\/eng\/2021\/10\/28\/stern-signal-to-china-india-tests-agni-5-ballistic-missile\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Stern signal to China\u2019: India tests Agni-5 ballistic missile"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"content-area\" data-io-article-url=\"https:\/\/www.geo.tv\/latest\/378666-in-a-stern-signal-to-china-india-tests-agni-5-ballistic-missile\">\n<ul>\n<li><b>In a message to China, India tests a ballistic missile capable of carrying a nuclear warhead up to 3,100 miles.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Agni-5 missile blasted off from Abdul Kalam Island off India\u2019s east coast late Wednesday and splashed into the Bay of Bengal.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Indian media says the timing was aimed at sending a signal to China.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr class=\"editorHr\" \/>\n<p>NEW DELHI: India has tested a ballistic missile capable of carrying a nuclear warhead up to 5,000 kilometres (3,100 miles), the defense ministry said, in what media called a &#8220;stern signal&#8221; to China as the two remain locked in a border spat.<\/p>\n<p>The Agni-5 missile blasted off from Abdul Kalam Island off India\u2019s east coast late Wednesday and splashed into the Bay of Bengal.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The successful test &#8230; is in line with India\u2019s stated policy to have \u2018credible minimum deterrence\u2019 that underpins the commitment to \u2018No First Use\u2019 [of nuclear weapons],&#8221; a defense ministry statement said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The 17-metre-tall missile has been tested several times before, but not at night, and local media said that the timing was aimed at sending a signal to Beijing.<\/p>\n<p>Tensions with China have been running high since 20 Indian soldiers died in clashes on their disputed Himalayas border in June 2020.<\/p>\n<p>The nuclear-armed neighbors have since reinforced the frontier with tens of thousands of extra troops.<\/p>\n<p>India has deepened defense cooperation with Western countries in recent years, including in the Quad alliance with the United States, Japan and Australia.<\/p>\n<p>New Delhi is also a major buyer of Russian military hardware, and ordered Moscow\u2019s S-400 missile defense system despite the threat of US sanctions over the $5.4 billion deal.<\/p>\n<p>The Financial Times reported this month that China had tested a supersonic missile that circled the Earth at low orbit before descending toward, but missing, its target.<\/p>\n<p>Beijing denied the report, insisting it was a routine test of a reusable space vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>Supersonic are the new frontier in missile technology, because they fly lower and are harder to detect than ballistic missiles, can reach targets more quickly, and are maneuverable.<\/p>\n<p>The United States, Russia, China and North Korea have all tested supersonic missiles and several others are developing the technology &#8212; including reportedly India.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Times of India, New Delhi is working on enabling the Agni-5 to carry several nuclear warheads at once so they can split up and hit different targets.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<div class=\"ads mb20 ads-bg\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1523347432315-11\" data-google-query-id=\"CIvi_LWD7fMCFRJE0wodxSELRg\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In a message to China, India tests a ballistic missile capable of carrying a nuclear warhead up to 3,100 miles.
