{"id":11010,"date":"2021-07-26T05:27:01","date_gmt":"2021-07-26T05:27:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dailykashmirpost.com\/eng\/?p=11010"},"modified":"2021-07-26T05:27:01","modified_gmt":"2021-07-26T05:27:01","slug":"pakistan-misses-out-on-maiden-olympic-weightlifting-medal-after-talha-talib-falls-short","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dailykashmirpost.com\/eng\/2021\/07\/26\/pakistan-misses-out-on-maiden-olympic-weightlifting-medal-after-talha-talib-falls-short\/","title":{"rendered":"Pakistan misses out on maiden Olympic weightlifting medal after Talha Talib falls short"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"content-area\" data-io-article-url=\"https:\/\/www.geo.tv\/latest\/361613-pakistan-misses-out-on-maiden-olympic-weightlifting-medal-after-talha-talib-falls-short\">\n<p class=\"\">KARACHI: Pakistan came close to its maiden weightlifting medal at the Tokyo Olympics on Sunday but fell just a little short as Talha Talib finished 5th in the competition.<\/p>\n<p>Talha, competing in the 67kg men&#8217;s weightlifting contest, was on top of the race for a while before being surpassed by athletes from China, Colombia, and Italy in final attempts.<\/p>\n<p>The 21-year-old weightlifter \u2014 first from Pakistan in 44 years \u2014 entered the competition without a coach, yet he showed his mettle.<\/p>\n<p>After lifting 150kg in the snatch lift, Talha fell while attempting 166kg in the first attempt at the clean and jerk move. He lifted 170kg in his final attempt to have an overall lift of 320kg.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Talha remained a leader on the board before Korea&#8217;s Han Mayekon lifted 174kg in the clean and jerk lift to push Talha down to second place. Colombia\u2019s Luis Javier lifted 180kg and Italy\u2019s Zalmi Mirko lifted 177kg in the clean and jerk move to push Talha further down.<\/p>\n<p>The gold medal, however, went to China\u2019s Chen Lijun who lifted 187kg in the clean and jerk move \u2014 a new Olympic record \u2014 to have an overall lift of 332kg in the completion.<\/p>\n<p>Talha, a gold medalist in the Commonwealth Games, finished 5th in the competition. Although he couldn\u2019t win a medal, he received praise from all over the country for his superb performance.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview ahead of the Olympics, Talha had highlighted how the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) had not organised any training camp for weightlifters in the last three years.<\/p>\n<p>Talha himself had to train at a makeshift gym in the courtyard of a school in Gujranwala in the absence of an adequate facility arranged by the PSB.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<div class=\"ads mb20 ads-bg\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1523347432315-11\" data-google-query-id=\"CNOr1-n___ECFcwy0wodE2IEtQ\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>KARACHI: Pakistan came close to its maiden weightlifting medal at the Tokyo Olympics on Sunday but fell just a little short as Talha Talib finished 5th in the competition.
